GREAT BRITAIN: AE medal (16.34g), 1739, Adams & Chao-PBv-13k, Eimer-552, 27mm, Admiral Edward Vernon - Capture of Porto Bello, ADMIRAL VERNON TOOK PORTO BELLO, half-length figure of Admiral Vernon in frock coat facing slightly left, holding staff // WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY NOV 22, six ships entering Portobello harbor, 1739 in exergue, VF. Porto Bello was a major naval base in the New World from which Spanish forces frequently harassed British shipping in the Caribbean. After famously claiming that he could take the city with a mere six ships, Admiral Edward Vernon successfully captured the settlement following a two-day siege.
